SERVICES The Garnett
Community Medical Building This is a new facility with easy access to the
Anderson County Hospital. Anderson County Hospital A 3.8 mil bond was issued for renovation and
addition to the existing facility and is currently
in process. These include a new handicapped front
entrance, private bathrooms in patient rooms, and
completely redesigned outpatient facilities with a
rear entry to the hospital. Anderson county Hospital is a rural, general,
short-term, acute care hospital with an attached
long-term care unit. There are a total of 57
licensed beds distributed as follows:
medical/surgical -25; and long-term acre
unit-32. Anderson County Hospital is organized as a
county hospital pursuant to K.S.A. 19-4601 et seq.
It is certified by Medicare through the Kansas
Department of Health and Environment as a Critical
Access Hospital. The attached 32-bed, long term
care units accept Medicaid patients and usually
operated at capacity with a waiting list. At the present time, by contractual agreement
with Anderson County, Anderson County Hospital
operates the county ambulance service which
currently has three Type 1 units staffed by
certified emergency medical technicians. Anderson County Hospital offers a range of
outpatient services including laboratory,
radiology, respiratory, pharmacy, physical therapy,
and speech therapy, plus some additional services
provided by mobile units which are scheduled into
the hospital on a regular basis. CT Scan and
mammography are available on site. There are rural
health clinics in Garnett, and a hospital-based
home health agency covers Anderson, Linn, Franklin,
Coffey, Allen and Bourbon counties. Primary care is provided by an active medical
staff comprised of three family practice physicians
one OB/GYN and one Internist. There are also many
specialists on the consulting staff who conduct
specialty clinics on a monthly basis. The hospital is currently leased by Saint
Luke's-Shawnee Mission Health System of Kansas

Office Gynecology (785) 448-6410 SCHOOLS The community is served by two unified school
districts, USD 365 in Garnett, and USD 479 based in
Kincaid, and two parochial schools in Garnett and
Greeley. USD 365 ( www.usd365.k12.ks.us
)in Garnett is the largest district, covering
some 420 square miles in Anderson, Coffey, Linn,
and Franklin counties, and is headquartered in
Garnett. The primary area served is Northern
Anderson County. Schools are located in the rural
communities of Greeley, Mont Ida, and Westphalia.
Two elementary schools and the district high school
are located in Garnett. Approximately 1,000 students are served in the
districts grades K-12. These students are served by
a teaching staff of 80 certified personnel,
providing for a low teacher/student ration of 13/1.
Special services are provided by teachers hired
through the special education cooperative located
at Paola. USD 479 in Kincaid services the
educational needs of students in the southern area
of Anderson County, covering 177 square miles in
Anderson and north Allen counties. The system
staffs 25 regular certified personnel with
293(1989)students K-12. The district participates
in educational cooperatives in both Girard and
Humboldt, and extracurricular activities are
performed within the Three Rivers League
Association. The district broadens its education
offerings with a satellite communications system
and a modern desktop publishing system for its art
and journalism classes. Two facilities comprise the
district, one at Colony and one at the district's
office in Kincaid. Area colleges and vo-tech schools in close
proximity include Flint Hills AVTS, 60 miles: Allen
County Community College, 28 miles; Ft. Scott
Community College, 60 miles; as well as Ottawa,
Baker, Emporia State, and the University of Kansas
within a 60 mile radius. RECREATION Garnett's ( www.garnettks.net
) prides itself in providing an abundance of
year-round recreational programs for both young and
old. Presently offered organized sports include
baseball, pitchball, T-ball, flag football, biddy
basketball, fall soccer, and play days for
pre-school age children. Instructional programs for
golf, tennis, and swimming are also offered. Organized sports for adults include co-ed
volleyball, men's basketball, co-ed softball,
aerobic exercise classes, water aerobics, and
country and western dance lessons. Garnett also
supports an active Senior Citizen Center for
recreational activities designed especially for
senior citizens. Such events as carry-in dinners,
card parties, quilting, craft classes, and dances
are held on a regular basis. The Prairie Spirit Trail, ( prairiespirittrail.org
) is 33 miles in length from Ottawa to Welda,
passes through Garnett and offers a scenic form of
recreation for walkers, bicyclists, skaters, bird
watchers and is accessible for persons with
wheelchairs or walkers. Garnett's North Park is a centerpiece for
outdoor entertainment in the area. Complete with
electric and water hook-ups and a paved surface
road throughout the park, its functions are
centered around the 55 acre Lake Garnett. The park
includes various covered picnic areas and table
sites, a nearby fair and rodeo complex, shooting
range, four lighted baseball fields, lighted
football stadium, four lighted tennis courts, a
basketball court, public swimming pool, children's
playground, go-kart track, rifle range, skeet
range, horse shoe pit, soccer field, sand
volleyball court, and the Garnett County Club, and
a 9 hole golf course. The park is the focus of many events during the
year including the Anderson County Fair,
International Karting Federation go-kart races,
horse shows at the Anderson County Horse Arena, and
the annual Libertyfest Fourth of July Celebration.
Other organized events during the year include
endurance and spring go-kart races, a triathlon,
golf tournaments, organized baseball and softball
from T-ball through American Legion to adult slow
pitch, trap shooting contests, sand volleyball
tournaments and fishing derbies. Other park areas in the Anderson county
community include Garnett's South Park, which
surrounds Crystal Lake, and Cedar Valley Reservoir,
located west of Garnett. The 320 acre reservoir is
a boating and fishing haven with continuing
development of RV and wilderness camping and picnic
areas. The reservoir has two launch facilities and
two floating docks. GOVERNMENT Government: The county commission meets quarterly with the
Garnett city Commission as a direct and unabated
link between the two governments to deal with
mutually affective items of business. The county
set of Anderson County, Garnett is a community of
3,252 population and has shown steady growth over
the past 35 years. Garnett's city administration is
composed of a mayor and two commissioners, and a
city commission/manager form of government. It is a
second class Kansas city, and has a comprehensive
zoning package. The area benefits from a low crime
rate, and has 911 emergency phone service. Utility/Community
Information: Communication services are provided by Sprint,
Inc. with a service facility located in the Garnett
Industrial Park. The area is also served by nine
regional television stations, a local cable
carrier(TCI of Kansas, Inc), and overall 31 channel
reception. A 320 acre reservoir was constructed in 1984
west of the city which provides a source of
domestic and industrial water for Garnett and four
rural water districts in the surrounding trade
area. The reservoir is also equipped to meet
recreational needs with boating, fishing, camping
and picnic facilities available. The city also is
served by the 55 acre Lake Garnett, the city's
original reservoir, and Crystal Lake (14 acres).
Between these three lakes, Garnett and the
surrounding area has an over abundant supply of
water available for both residential and industrial
needs. Natural gas is purchased from private suppliers
and distributed through the city-owned and operated
system. Sewer and refuse collection systems are
also owned and operated by the City of Garnett. CHURCHES The churches of Anderson County invite you to
